Logistics graduate certificates: From corporate training to master degrees

Abstract: This paper looks at logistics graduate certificates to bridge the gap between undergraduate education, corporate training and graduate degree programs. It explores the reasons for choosing a graduate logistics program and the design and execution of the logistics curriculum. The study included Thai logistics management students from an international undergraduate degree program. The research questions are related to the expected learning outcomes of graduate certificate based of participants background and reasons for choosing the certificate root either in the desire to obtain a graduate degree or certification for teaching purposes, or in continuing education and corporate training to acquire a desired skill set. The quality of the program can be measured on the success of its graduates in terms of overseas graduate school admission and credit hour transfer as well as recognition of the certificate by other ASEAN countries and industry. Many ASEAN countries like Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Philippines and Vietnam are in the process of developing emerging markets and establishing logistics curriculums in colleges and universities ranging from certificate to bachelor and master degree programs. At the same time industry is expanding their logistics activities in terms of import and export and inbound/outbound logistics activities including warehouse and transportation management as well as total supply chain integration and supply chain risk management. Certificate programs offer real-life learning experiences with industry experts as instructors and field visits and current case studies. STEM education and lifelong learning skills come alive in logistics certificate programs. Certificate programs that target instructors as participants, these are real train the trainer courses for corporate in-house trainers, votech, and vocational trainer, community college, college and university faculty members. The question is how can so much be incorporated in a certificate program? How does the program need to be designed and executed in order to achieve the desired learning outcomes and meets the expectations of both industry and ministry of education and satisfies the needs and desires of prospective learners.
