Thai nurses’ persuasive strategies and their impact on foreign patients’ health and behavior

Patient noncompliance is a critical problem in health care field. Nurses, however, can help patients change their health behavior in a way that is appropriate for managing their diseases by providing patient education. Little is known about persuasive strategies used by nurses, especially in cross-cultural context. This study is a survey research using both quantitative and qualitative methods to investigate three elements: (1) Thai nurses’ persuasive strategies to help foreign patients change their health behavior, (2) the successful strategies to promote the change in the patients’ behavior in three levels of prevention, and (2) key factors enhancing success in the change. The instrument of this study was a written self-administered questionnaire with both closed and open-ended questions distributed to 152 Thai ward nurses working in two private hospitals in Bangkok. Seventy-nine questionnaires were returned. Meanwhile, ten senior nurses were interviewed to collect the information on their perspectives regarding the successful strategies to promote the change and the key factors making their persuasion successful. The findings revealed that frequently used strategies were using simple words and establishing good relationships with the patients. Furthermore, the successful strategies were related to providing health information, raising the patients’ awareness of the importance of performing health behavior, promoting family participation in helping the patients, and raising the patients’ self-efficacy. There were four key factors enhancing the success in helping the change: patient, health professional, family, and environment.
